The Titanic was a British steamship created because of intense competition between two rival shipping lines. The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceberg, leading to the deaths of more than 1,500 out of the 2,240 passengers and crew.

The Titanic is a part of United States maritime history. The ship was owned by the British White Star Line, an American-owned International Mercantile Marine company.
