Public Law 94-142, or IDEA, was passed in the wake of the War on Poverty, a time in which the government's role in education grew. The IDEA was hugely significant as it required free and appropriate education for all, including students with exceptionalities. This act was the catalyst for the support of learners with exceptionalities and is a massive part of what special education consists of today.
