Signed to officially establish the European Union
Treaty is comprised of 3 Pillars:
1. The European Communities
2. The common foreign and security policy (CFSP)
3. Cooperation in the field of justice and home affairs (JHI)
Treaty also laid down the foundation for the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) which would later define the euro as the single currency and also strengthened the European Parliament and introduced the concept of European Citizenship:
This gave people in the EU an additonal citizenship on top of the national citizenship, which would grant special rights such as travelling and living freely in the EU, vote in European elections and more
Pillar 1: grouped together the activites of EEC, ECSC and EURATOM
Pillar 2: keeping EU common values safe, increasing security of member states, promote international cooperation like with the UN and preserve and promote democracy and human rights
Pillar 3: keeping public safe by establishing borders, fighting against terrorism, organised crime, drug trafficking and international fraud.
Created Europol and established a common asylum policy
The treaty also established multiple new policies such as the EU consumer protection policy, industrial policy, youth policy, etc...
