23 jul 1952 ano - Creation of European Coal and Steel Community (Treaty of Paris)

Descrição:

brought together 6 countries (Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands) to organise the free movement of coal and steel and to free up access to sources of production - it was signed in Paris thus dubbing it the "Treaty of Paris"

Proposed in 1950 by Robert Schuman

The goal was to minimise competition in Europe for coal and steel, by setting up a common market to achieve interdependence for war reparations.

The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was the catalysator for what was to become of Europe, as step by step over the next 70 years it would unify Europe democratically and lead to the now 27 countries in the European Union, an upgrade from the then 6

The ESCS established institutions like the High Authority (today’s European Commission), an Assembly (today's European Parliament), a Council of Ministers (today’s Council of the European Union) and a Court of Justice. They still serve the main purposes today that they were created for, but have expanded and progressed as more Countries started joining.

The Treaty was the first great achievement of the supranational Europe. For the first time, the six Member States of this organisation surrendered part of their national sovereignty, albeit in a limited field, to the Community.

It expired in 2002, 50 years after it was signed.
