- Stalin pretended to be close to Lenin, giving his fellow Party members as well as the general public the impression that Lenin had favoured and trusted Stalin. Stalin also organised Lenin’s funeral and gave the funeral speech, establishing himself as the chief mourner.
- Stalin also kept Trotsky from attending Lenin’s funeral by giving him the wrong date.
