In 1826, Edgar Allan Poe attended UVA where he excelled in his classes, but had to drop out because of an enormous debt that had built up. This debt was caused by his fathers underpayment for tuition and Poe's gambling in attempt to make up for the missing money. This showed as a down in Poe's relationship with his father and financial.
