At this time Portuguese explorers began to chart the West coasts and islands of Africa, setting up small colonies and trading ports in the name of Portugal. The sea route around Southern Africa had just been discovered as a way to get to India, and so a second voyage was sent to establish trade in March 1500. It was during this voyage that Pedro Álvares Cabral and his fleet were forced to head West across the Atlantic in an attempt to avoid strong sea currents. They went so far West that in the April this fleet came to land on the coast of modern-day Brazil, becoming the first Europeans ever to set foot in South America.
