8 jun 793 ano - Lindisfarne Raid
Descrição:
In 793 CE, a Viking raid took place on the island of Lindisfarne/Holy Island. This attack was an assault on the centre of Christiantiy in the kingdom of Northumbria and marked the start of the Viking Age.
At the time, Vikings had attacked the Chritstian sanctuary for treasure and resources. However, due to the importance of the monastery in Lindisfarne, this attack was regarded as a crisis. In the letters written by Alcuin, an Anglo-Saxon man in Northumbria, the raid was depicted as a desecration and an assault that defiled a holy place. The Vikings caused so much destruction in the end that some Anglo-Saxon Christian leaders said God had sent the Vikings to punish the people in England for their sins.
