14 out 1066 ano - The Battle of Hastings, The last true Viking Attack on England

Descrição:

The Battle of Hastings arose over a disputed discussion on succession after Edward the Confessor died without any direct heir. There were many competitors for the crown and the ones who took part in the battle were:
- Harold Godwinson (Earl of Wessex, who was promised the throne by Edward who was dying)
- William the Conquerer (Duke of Normandy, who, according to Norman historians, was promised by Edward to be his heir in 1051.)
- Harald Hardrada (Last Viking king of Norway and a proficient military general who wanted to claim England)
- Tostig Godwinson (Earl of Northumbria before being exiled by his brother, Harold Godwinson).
One contender who didn't participate any battles was Edgar Atheling, great nephew of Edward. Athough he had blood ties to the previous king, due to his young age and lack of power he was not considered strong enough to hold the kingdom together in 1066.

At the battle, Tostig and Hardrada joined forces to defeat Harold, but were defeated (and killed) instead. As Harold's weary troops marched to meet the Norman troops that William lead, they finally met near Hastings at a place now appropriately called Battle. In the end William defeated Harold and was crowned king of England on Christmas Day 1066.
