The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. The main purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to state the reasons why the British colonies sought independence. A few major points of the Declaration of Independence are: that all men are created equally, all men have basic rights given to them by God, the government must be by the consent of the governed. Jefferson gave the declaration to King George III and it was officially signed on July 4th, 1776.
