Spanish penetration of northern Luzon began in 1572, that is, some
seven years after Legazpi's occupation of the Manila region. The first
reference to Ilocos appears to be in a relation of the Conquest of Luzon,
dated April 20, 1572, ,,which takes note of ";t province called Yloquio, which
is said to be very rich in gold mines; but the Spanish have not seen it as
yet" (Blair and Robertson, to be abbreviated from here on as B&R, III, 171).
