After acquiring both the New York World and St. Louis Dispatch newspapers in the 1880s, Pulitzer published stories utilizing yellow journalism to attract more readers.Yellow journalism focuses on sensational and scandalous stories, which are often highly exaggerated of not deeply researched. An excellent example of his application of this style of writing was during the cries of the Cuban people for independence from Spain. Both Pulitzer and his rival, William Randolph Hearst, exaggerated the conditions of the Cuban people and called for the government to go to war with Spain. Many modern-day historians argue that the work of Pulitzer and Hearst was a main factor in the US going to war with Spain.
