This was the first significant law, restricting immigration into the United States. Those on the West Coast were affected the most, with declining wages and economic ills on the Chinese. While the Chinese only made up .002 percent of the nation's population, Congress passed this act in order to alleviate worker demands and mitigate concerns about maintaining racial purity of all whites.
