On this evening, the Reichstag (German government/parliament building) was set on fire. Nazi officials gathered at the site until Hitler arrived, where he flew into a blind, paranoid rage and insisted that the fire was a signal for a Communist revolt. He used this opportunity to essentially declare martial law, the beginning of his total seizure of power in Germany. In reality, the fire was set by a lone Dutch, who was more than likely helped by Hitler's own SA. In the following hours, the Berlin police began to detain people whose names were on old lists of alleged left-wing extremists. These lists were revised to include the names of people the Nazis hated.
