Josephus mentions an eclipse of the moon shortly before the death of Herod. (Josephus,
Antiquities 16,6,4). This eclipse is the only one alluded to by Josephus and, as Jesus was born while Herod was still living (Mat 2/1-6) this serves to fix with a certain degree of accuracy the time after which the birth of Christ could NOT have taken place.
Josephus also states that Herod dies just before a Passover. (Antiquities 17,8,1 cp also 9,3). The next Passover in this year was April 8-9
