ok so sika is tending to them at the police station early the next morning, they're answering questions and stuff
an escort has brought ada and neslin, and ada is now fuzzing over maire, who says she's fine, even if she's kinda really not
kano is still very obviously upset with her, but he suggests that they have a little chat with wiliam once the police are done with him
they ask him why he did it, why he killed all those people, what he could have possibly gained from it, and also why he tried to kill them, neither of them are vowbreakers
wiliam laughs and says that the city is corrupt, that the rich ignore the plea of the poor, and the poor sell themselves to sin just to survive
he says that even if he can understand that, he can't condone it, and everyone is better off without all of them
he also maybe doesn't answer the last bit or it's like 'everyone is a vowbreaker, everyone is a fucking hypocrite'
kano nearly fucking jumps him, but maire holds him back
he pushes away from her and leaves
maire asks him how he knew that language, how he knew what words to write, and wiliam grins and leans closer to her and whispers in her ear that 'SHE told him'
now, maire's seen those papers, so she thinks he's talking about ll
once again, happy lil coincidence
she leaves and tries to talk to kano, but he calls her out on some of her poor behaviour, just getting some of his frustrations out
maire's all 'i-i'm SORRY what more do you want?'
so he's all 'god, u just don't get it. sorry doesn't fix shit, maire, that's not the fucking point. u thought i'd KILLED someone. SEVERAL someones, actually. u thought i was a murderer, and now ur acting like it's no big deal, like i haven't got every fucking right to be pissed at u'
maire's all 'what was i supposed to believe? what about the drugs, kano, honestly?'
kano scoffs and says the drug line
he leaves maire behind, stunned to silence
she takes ada and neslin back to the castle where the duke has now ordered a lockdown
while everyone is disoriented, maire goes to see isa to show her the records and tell her what wiliam told her
isa pretends to be all shocked all the while planning to have wiliam killed so he won't say anything more he isn't supposed to
she's all 'this proves it, i'll have her arrested, until then, u can't be alone with her or she'll kill u, too'
(isa doesn't have her arrested, she has her beaten unconscious and hidden away and pretends like she escaped to kill wiliam, all with the intent of having her 'caught' afterwards and executed (ll is by now the only one who's figured her out, she's had her suspicions for years, but she's never had proof, and she couldn't just accuse her brother's much beloved wife))
she calls for her the guard (her own personal guard, they'll probably be mentioned in book 2 more) to arrest ll (her quarters are nearby, it's the royal wing after all, they're not that far apart) but a few minutes later, they hear smth and they rush to see what the fuck happened and the door has been ripped off like kano's prison cell, so isa's all 'she must have taken that drug and escaped'
she immediately tells her duke to send guards after her, at least just to get her back
this is all a ploy, her guards literally faked the scene
anyways, maire thinks smth is very very wrong, so she takes kano (who's with sika after everything, so he's in his cellar) to see wiliam again bc she's got a baaaad feeling about this
they go, he's been hung, and they know it wasn't suicide, bc he has the typical ritualistic thing going on
