everyone is super tense. the duke is under a lot of pressure bc of winsborough and the disappearances and the murder and now flyers have been put up of isa and james
james is upset with ada for sneaking out, ada is upset she was caught, maire is just tired, isa's tense bc of the flyers, too, and she keeps looking at james, and james keeps ignoring her
things are not very good
then the duke stands up and everyone looks at him and he announces that they'll have to do smth about the mood, so they're gonna move the ballet forward to tonight, since it's the day for theatrics, anyway
he asks neslin if this is ok with her, but what's she really gonna say?
she accepts, the duke's all 'great, i'll get that settled'
maire meets up with kano on magdana's place (while ada is going around blessing people with the minister) to examine the crime scene after the police have left (i mean, how much time are they really gonna spend on the murder of one insignificant dude, even as grusome as it was, especially with the flyers and unrest in the ward, they're helping out the city guard)
kano tells her about meeting the fox and that his name is alexander and all that
they look over the church
while they're looking, kano notices elias and asks what his deal is anyway
maire gives him a short version of what happened four years ago, and kano sympathises
there are still nailmarks in the marble, and dried blood on the steps, and the word 'prizu' is still faintly visible, possibly written in blood
there are also little blood spatters leading to the entrance, the handle is a bit skewered, and there are scratchmarks on the marble that stop abruptly at the threshhold, like whatever was chasing him couldn't enter
they go inside and look around for a bit
maire notices some blood in one corner, and kano notices little splinters next to it (james later examines wil's walking stick, noting that it's old and splintered) and he guesses that they probably came from a bat or a cane used to bash mackinkle's head in
as he says this, maire looks at him and the faded bruise on his cheek, and she reaches up to touch it, he brushes her hand away, so she asks how she got it, that it's newer than the one from the first day of midsummer
kano shrugs and says mackinkle was from three just in a particularly bad mood that day. he looks up at the ceiling and notes that they'll have to find someone else to finish the job
maire reaches up to touch it again, he grabs her wrist and tells her to come off it
just then, the door opens and reveals who else than jos himself
they shuffle out to meet him, he frowns and asks who kano is
maire introduces the two, and kano mutters a goodbye and leaves
maire asks what jos is doing there, he says that he came to pray for his mother and that now that people have started avoiding the church (bc it's been a few days, people flocked around before that until the police left) it's the most peaceful place in the city
she asks how he is, he tells her that things are going horribly. his younger siblings are being all but locked in to keep them from disappearing in the fog, and his dad and his crew found a ship at the edge of the fog on their way to go fishing, and it was entirely devoid of people, so they raised the alarm and the dock is officially in quarantine, so they're not making any money currently
maire then asks him to join her at the ballet that night, he accepts, they go their different ways
later than night, maire has to watch from an isolated balcony that's close to the royal box, but still in the kinda commoner area close to the staff entrance
jos finds her, they share a sweet little moment where she explains what the ballet is all about, and when the music swells and neslin starts this big spin thingy kinda like that black swan spin, they kiss, it's all cute, and then people start gasping and the music dies (that's ironic)
they pull the curtain away to see neslin on the floor, clutching her ankle
people rush to help her, her uncle comes storming in, she kinda shrinks away from her when he bends down and touches her thigh and her foot, and then she kinda screams 'get away from me' at him and he does, hurrying off stage
a medic comes in to look at her, everyone's buzzing, the curtains are drawn
maire rushes to find adamina, jos on her heels, and when they find each other, ada's all 'oh no this is horrible, we should go help her'
but just as they're on their way, someone screams and everyone rushes to the lobby to see neslin's uncle dead on the floor
but that's not the kicker, bc his entire body has been pierced by a stag's antlers, and the stag itself has had his head cut off and put on the floor, and then georgie was pierced by it
it's dramatic
on his chest, 'ryszard' has been written, and next to his body 'doila' or smth
neslin comes out, wearing a robe and being supported by someone, and she throws a hand over her mouth and starts crying at the sight bc that's still a person she knows who's been killed in a very horrible manner
