26 abr 1986 ano - Chernobyl disaster

Descrição:

The Chernobyl nuclear reactor was built in 1972 after Fukushima was built. The reactors melted down 14 years later. They melted down during a safety inspection. This safety inspection included the power being lowered to 7%. This tested the cooling systems to see if the reactors could withstand the heat. The reactors could not withstand the heat leading to the meltdown. This accident has been claimed to be the worst nuclear disaster in history. Not only did a meltdown occur, there were also multiple explosions. A chain reaction was set off in the core of the reactor leading to multiple explosions and a massive "fireball" that blew the steel and concrete top off the reactor. This along with the massive fire caused large amounts of radiation to be leaked into the atmosphere. On April 27th, 30,000 civilians were evacuated due to the toxic atmosphere. Then later, Swedish stations reported high amounts of "wind-transported" radioactivity. Clearly, this is the worst reported nuclear disaster in all of history.
