This resolution let President Lyndon Johnson to “take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression.” They created this because of the attacks on two Naval destroyers near the coast of Vietnam.
This was a crucial event that led helped America step into the Vietnam War. Many citizens organized anti-war protests which caused President Johnson to not take part in reelection. In 2005, documents suggested that the Gulf of Tonkin may have been faked and that President Lyndon Johnson wanted to take part in the war because of the fear of communism.
