Hyppolytus travels to Athens to meet their father. Their arrival threatens the claim of Phaedra's sons, and Hyppolytus is killed. News of their death arrives at Themiscrya, and the Amazons declare war on Athens.

Some Thrakian and Scythian slaves were kept in Athens, and Hyppolyta took advantage of this opportunity. She summoned the Scythian and Thrakian allies and sent diplomatic envoys including both and Amazons, lead by Anitope. They were to contact the slave leaders to gain their assistance for the attack, and would have their for freedom in return.

She asked Sagillus, the Scythian king, for assistance, and he sent his son Panasagoras with a body of cavalry to her aid. Hyppolyta then triumphantly marched her army across the Bosporus and through the area of Thrake. Hyppolyta besieged Athens. However, some disagreement occurred between the allies, and the Scythians left the battlefield. The Amazons were eventually defeated; in the battle Antiope was killed. Hyppolyta built a tomb for Antiope after completing a treaty with the Athenians. In the battles Hyppolyta had received serious injuries and ultimately died of these. She was buried on route home by her army. The remainder of the army returned home safely.

Hyppolyta's successor was Penthesilea.
