During this period a new generation of Māori artists would emerge. Gordon Tovey, a visionary and head of art and crafts in the Department of Education, made moves to have specialist training for primary school trainees.

This resulted in the revolution of teaching art and crafts in schools. Artists Selwyn Muru, Buck Nin, Fred Graham, John Bevan Ford, Ralph Hotere, Kāterina Mataira, Cliff Whiting ,Sandy Adsett and others were amongst the first to be recruited, and then would become influential leaders of Māori contemporary Art.
