After the fire destroyed this location, the Pantheon was built. It was meant to appease the gods because the destruction of the previous buildings in its place was seen as a sign that the gods were unhappy. It stood statues of various gods and defied emperors. Myth says the Pantheon was dedicated to Romulus after he ascended into haven from that site.
