The Lodge Corollary was the name given to the resolution passed by the Senate in 1912 which prohibited non-European powers from possessing territory in the Western Hemisphere. The resolution was introduced by Massachusetts Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge in response to the interest that a group of Japanese investors expressed for buying a vast amount of land in Mexico’s Baja Peninsula (just south of California). Lodge worried that this was just a ploy and that, in reality, the Japanese government was secretly planning to acquire this land. The corollary sparked outrage and dissent, not only from Japan but also from Latin American countries and even President Taft.
