Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little but later changed his name because he rejected his "slave" name. The he was young he lived a life of crime and was imprisoned. While in jail he converted to the Nation of Islam and later he argued that the non violence of the civil rights movement did not work and they black people needed a revolution. He also argued that black people should respond to violence with violence. He criticized civil rights leaders for not protecting their communities. He was committed to black self determinations and argued that blacks were superior to whites. Therefore, Malcolm X challenged the liberalism of the civil rights movement. In 1965, members of the Nation of Islam murdered him for challenging their organization.
