1 jan 1832 ano - Abolitionism and Women's Rights

Descrição:

The most important abolitionist organization, The American Anti Slavery Society allowed women to participate starting in 1835. Sara Brimke and her sister Angelina Grimke lectured for the organization on a routine basis, but many opposed their public roles with the organization. However, this didn't stop 1,500 female millworkers from turning out to hear them speak at the Lowell town hall. Also, Maria Stewart, a free black widow spoke out against slavery to mixed sex and interacial audiences. Quaker women also advocated greatly for the ending of slavery.

As more women became involved in the abolitionist movement, in 1848, a small circle of women, including Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton organized the first convention , in Seneca Falls, focused exclusively on women's rights. One Hundred participants signed the Declaration of Sentiments which called for women's equality in everything from education and employment to legal rights and voting. Therefore, abolitionism provided significant momentum for the Women's rights movement.
