This debate over the Missouri Compromise occurred as the U.S. began expanding farther westward and established the southern border of Missouri as the boundary between slave and free states. This temporarily ended a crisis between free states and slave states, but it showed that maintaining the system of slavery was so important to the South, that it could threaten the existence of the U.S.
