. Less than 2 months after Catherine de’Medici issued the Edict of St. Germain, François de Lorraine, duc de Guise – who was a devout Catholic and vehemently anti-Huguenot – led troops to attack 300 Huguenots while they were holding a religious service in a barn outside the town of Vassy.

More than 60 Huguenots were killed and over 100 wounded during the Massacre of Vassy.
