24 dez 1814 ano - Treaty of Ghent
Descrição:
Ending the War of 1812, the Treaty of Ghent was adopted in 1814, in Ghent, Belgium, by British and American delegates. The British, who had fought Napoleon for more than a decade and had to preserve peace in Europe, were getting tired of fighting. On the other end, Madison acknowledged that it would be difficult for the Americans to achieve a clear victory. American peace commissioners would travel to negotiate terms of peace with British officials in Ghent. In 1814, an agreement was eventually reached where all fighting was stopped, occupied land was returned to former
owners, and the prewar frontier was recognized between Canada and the United States. However, the treaty did not say much about the disputes that started the war, because Britain did not make concessions
about impressions, blockades, or other maritime discrepancies. As a consequence, with no advantage for either side, the war ended in a truce.
