The show was developed by the late Stephen Hillenburg. Hillenburg had been obsessed with the sea since a young age and had been working at the Ocean Institute as a marine biologist when he started to attend animation festivals. (Cavna, 2009). Besides the ocean, drawing had been another passion for him. Hillenburg got into CalArts and studied animation. (Cavna, 2009). He eventually got a job working on Rocko’s Modern Life for Nickelodeon. One of his co-workers on the show came across an educational comic Hillenburg had written called The Intertidal Zone which featured a talking sponge. He was encouraged to develop the idea into a series, which eventually evolved into SpongeBob SquarePants (Beaumont-Thomas, 2016).
