Stalin is born to Besarion Jughashvili and Ekaterine Geladze as Ioseb Dzhugashvili in Gori, Georgia. His father was a poor shoemaker who often beat his son in fits of drunken rage. His mother was jobless until after his father left. She was a deeply religious woman and wanted her son to grow up and become a priest.
