This treaty reinforced the U.S. policy of neutrality by reaching a compromise with Britain with which Britain agreed to withdraw troops from the U.S. in exchange for American payment of debts to British firms. Many Americans opposed this treaty but it prioritized the goal of avoiding continued conflict with Britain and the willingness to compromise to achieve this goal.
