On April the 12th 1961, Gagarin was the first person to be launched into planetary orbit, and the first person to experience authentic Zero Gravity.

Not only did science as a whole gain a lot of information (the human body in zero-g, physics and vision in real orbit, etc.), but the Soviet Union also gained a huge lead in the Space Race.
