On February 27, 380 Theodosius I signed a decree stating that Christianity would be the official religion of Rome and allowed for the persecution of pagans and non-believers that the Christians themselves had recently faced. The importance of this came primarily from the societal and cultural influence it held since as the beliefs of the state had shifted so had their ideals and manner.
