The East German Communist Party declared that citizens of East Germany could cross the wall as they pleased. Millions of Germans fled to West Germany, and some even used picks and hammers to destroy the wall itself.

Significance: The destruction of the Berlin Wall was a major victory for the WEstern Bloc. The Wall was a symbol of Communism and oppression, and with its destruction, the citizens became free.
