The Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and the 1960s also motivated the gay and lesbian communities to organize and pursue equality and civil rights. Their movement started wit violent clashes after a police raid on the Stonewall Tavern in New York City. This was a one of a series of raids on bars that were frequented by the gay community, and gay people regarded this is harassment. As a result, the raid on the Stonewall Tavern resulted in clashes that lasted for days and ultimately started the gay rights movement.
