The immigration surge in major U.S. urban centers such as Chicago motivated progressives (primarily women) during the progressive era to help immigrant communities. Immigrants were living in impoverished conditions in overcrowded tenements and progressive women set up settlement houses such as Hull House to provide education and social opportunities to poor immigrant women and children.
