Social stratification was very present in China as there were many, many different classes put in place by Chinese society. There was the privileged classes, who were the scholar-bureaucrats and gentry. They wore black gowns with blue borders. There was working classes, who were the peasants, artisans, and merchants. Peasants were the biggest class and were considered the most honorable due to Confucian values. Merchants ranked at the bottom level of the Confucian social hierarchy because moralists saw them as social parasites.
