-unanimous decision

-effectively overturned Plessy v. Ferguson 1896

-Eisenhower's reaction: criticised it in private (no public comment) as he believed it couldn't change southern attitudes (not capable of bringing about de facto change, but would cause "social disintegration" + reverse progress)
