The discovery of gold resulted in tens of thousands of settlers to California which increase the tensions of whites with Native Americans and Californios (wealthy Mexican ranchers). Native Americans and Mexican women were especially vulnerable to sexual harassment. In addition, Chines women were brought to California to provide sexual services.
