During the period of the historic destruction of the Denikinist
rearguard by the Makhnovists in October, 1919, one of the most
brilliant operations of the Kontrrazvedka was ensuring the fall of
Berdyansk. According to Gerasimenko, the fate of the city was
determined by an attack, organized by the Makhnovists, of fishermen from the nearby settlement of Liska. In this night attack, the
fishermen seized a Denikinist battery, the guns of which were then
used by the Makhnovists to rake the city. Of course, the attack of
the fishermen was not organized by Makhno in person, but by the
Makhnovist Kontrrazvedka.
