This union (also called the Wobblies) was inspired by and grew out of the Western Federation of Miners which fought for the rights of miners for better wages and shorter hours. They attempted to unite skilled and unskilled workers and were popular among lumber jacks in northwest, docks orders in port cities, miners in west and textile workers in northeast. The significance is that even though faced government resistance and employer resistance, they set the agenda for for collective bargaining, higher wages, shorter hours for the unions of the 20th century.
