Truman established that America would defend democratic countries from internal and external authoritarian threats. The Doctrine allowed America to intervene with and stabilize Germany and Turkey, which later joined NATO.

Significance: The Truman Doctrine was the basis for all of America's policies regarding the Cold War. He declared that America would combat communism on every front.
