On May 3, 1886, police killed 2 strikers and as a result, anarchists led by August Spies called for a rally in Haymarket Square to protest police violence. Made of mostly foreign born radicals, they believed that the government represented the interests of capitalists and stifled freedom for workers. May 4, at least 1500 people, who listened to a series of speeches. That evening, 180 policemen decided to break it up. As they moved into the square, someone set off a bomb
