Nazi Germany and the Communist Soviet Union were both known to be polar opposites on the political spectrum. So it really came to a surprise when they established their non aggression to each other. As many countries became confused, they also had reasonable suspicions towards this. The surprise ended up being a 2 way invasion of Poland between Russia and Germany which then was the final cause of the start of the second great war.
