After a brutal war with the Algerian nationalist militant group FLN, president Charles de Gaulle agreed to grant Algeria independence in 1962. Algeria was the last of France's major territories and the last West African territory. Though the effects of French influence in North Africa can still be seen, it marked the unofficial end to the French Colonial Empire.
