As the Expel Birds Festival began, Lily took her son with her back to her natal home but along the way she secretly picked up Snow Flower and her son with her, against her mother-in-law's wishes. It was the first time the laotongs had met since giving birth. Snow Flower tells Lily about the horrendous acts of slaughter that goes on in her household daily, about her mother-in-law's crude and unkind actions towards her, her hot headed husband and just the general unhappiness she was in. Not sure how to respond to her laotong's circumstances which were completely different from hers, Lily responds in the proper way, telling Snow Flower to work more diligently to please her husband and mother-in-law and to try to conceive another son. Lily also notices how Snow Flower's son was skinny, yellow skinned, didn't feed well, and had a scrunched face, completely different from her own son.
