From the Manhattan project, the U.S had developed the atomic bomb. In order to force Japans unconditional surrender the U.S dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). After the bombs killed over 100,000 people, the Japanese Emperor announced their unconditional surrender on August 15.
