Op 15 maart 1825 verkreeg de Engelse instrumentenmaker en opticien Robert Bretell Bate (1782–1847) een patent voor ‘An Improvement in the Frames of Eye Glasses’ of ‘Handled spectacles with a spring action, in which the lenses are designed to fold over one another in which position they look like a single lens.’
