Colonists sailing on the Virginia Company's three ships sailed into Chesapeake Bay, where they built Fort James to protect the settlement Jamestown, named after the king of Great Britain. The colony was led by John Smith but after he was injured and traveled back to Britain, Jamestown almost deterioarated from famine.
