A joint agreement between Britain and America allowed people from both countries to settle in present-day Washington. Soon the Americans wanted the full territory and a negotiation was found. The land was split on the 49th parallel and the US gained Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, as well as portions of Montana and Wyoming.
